When I first heard ”The Islander” I was completely sold. When I read the lyrics through I was moved by the story in it. I almost felt I was adapting a five minute fantasy movie screenplay with a finished score.
The Islander is not a traditional Nightwish song, but a beautiful mixture of
an acoustic rock ballad and a celtic folk tune; what a great omelet. The story was there in the song but it was a common goal to spice it up a little. The video hopefully matches the original vision of
Nightwish; a band playing by campfire, telling stories of forgotten characters.
The video was shot in the Heart of Lapland, Rovaniemi, in the beginning of October. The location (Vammavaara) was almost too good to be true. It was an endless sea of rocks where every false step could have
meant a broken leg… or worse. That said everything tricky usually looks so beautiful it can’t be described by words.
